As station (As)
Do you prefer to cycle rather than walk? Gare d’As is the ideal starting point for a short bike ride in and around the National Park! Here too, the mining past is not far away: the 31 m observation tower is a replica of the drilling tower with which André Dumont discovered coal for the first time in Limburg, in 1901, in As.
For many years, As station played a central role in coal mining in this region. It was in fact from here that many miners and coal carts left for the nearby mines of Eisden, Waterschei and Winterslag. Today, a restored train station houses the narrowest visitor center in the entire National Park.
A little further on the site, you will find a 31 m observation tower which is a replica of the drilling tower with which André Dumont first discovered coal in Limburg. From up there, you will have a breathtaking view of the station site and the surrounding National Park.
The former small As station has today become a pleasant café which still exudes the atmosphere of yesteryear. The quay now serves as a terrace.
