"Hammerstein Castle" near Albig - remains of the Villa Rustica
“Hammerstein Castle” is the name given to the remains of the foundation wall, which are located below the Sumborn spring on a hill near Albig. After the walls were discovered, it was suspected that a medieval castle existed at this location and the remains were incorrectly called "Schloss Hammerstein". The castle gave its name to the individual location “Schloss Hammerstein”. However, the ruin turned out to be a Roman villa rustica when shards of bricks and vessels as well as a large number of coins were discovered. The villa was probably destroyed when the Alemanni advanced around the year 400.
