    One of the former ponds is the Sneppekot. It is one of the most valuable parts of the pond area in Central Limburg, but... not as a pond! The pond grew over due to dead plant material, but it remained marshy under the influence of rainwater and nutrient-poor seepage water. In this way, wet heathland developed here with gems such as peat moss, common bell heather, cotton grass and bog asphodel. Above it, the spotted dragonfly and the almost completely red coral damselfly flash in the summer. The reed bunting, bluethroat and water rail feel at home in the reed-covered areas. Through management work, Limburgs Landschap vzw is trying to prevent the afforestation of the Sneppekot, so that the rare species continue to have a chance. (Limburgs landschap vzw)

      A large part of the Bolderberg nature reserve consists of dry heathland. Especially the higher parts are rich in the typical heathland and sandy soil. As you can read elsewhere, this part of the nature reserve was given a name: the Gust Claesheide.

      But the Bolderberg nature reserve forms a landscape with forests, marshes and grasslands, in which there is also an important part of 'wet heathland'. At this place there is an information board that explains what this wet heath is and how it is created here.

      An important place is reserved for the Sneppekot that lies in front of you here. It was once a pond where iron ore was extracted, just like in many ponds of the Wijers. Gradually it grew closed, but it remained swampy and that in turn led to the formation of a raised moor. Raised moors and wet heaths, where you will find plants such as sphagnum mosses, heather, peat fluff and bog, are very rare and vulnerable habitats. That is why Limburgs Landschap vzw is working here to preserve and expand it. You can also read how this is done on the information board. Among the rare animals in the Sneppekot, now a high moor, you will find the snipe, moor frog and some dragonfly and ground beetle species. Among the many plant species, there is the carnivorous sundew plant in the more open areas. Due to the fragility of the area, you can only look at it and not enter the swampy area.
