The first fountain was built in 1612 by Carlo Maderno, a famous Swiss architect who also designed the facade of St. Peter's Basilica. The second fountain was added in 1675 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, a master of Baroque art who also created the basilica's colonnade and baldachin. The fountains spray water to a height of about 20 meters and have a diameter of 16 meters. They are decorated with marble shells, lion heads and angels.
