The stadtholder's burial space in the choir

The first Frisian stadtholder was Count Willem Lodewijk, also known as Us Heit. Willem Lodewijk married his cousin Anna of Orange in 1587. She was a daughter of William of Orange who was murdered in Delft in 1584. Unfortunately, the marital happiness did not last long because Anna died on June 13, 1588 at the Botniahuis in Franeker. Anna was only 26 years old. Willem Lodewijk then received permission from the city council of Leeuwarden to bury his deceased wife in the choir of the Jacobijnerkerk. In 1591 a monument was built in her memory. This grave monument was made in 1591 by Johan Schoorman, a sculptor from Ghent. It was made of black marble. This depicted Anna life-size, carved in white alabaster. Two heraldic stones were attached to the head and foot of the tomb. There were also sixteen shields with the coats of arms of her great-great-grandparents on both sides of the monument.
