In front of the dike
On the south side of the Dusseldorf South Park you will find on 23 hectares the natural habitats water and meadow, called "in front of the dike". The starting point for the gardeners was a deep, groundwater-fed quarry pond, which had been created by gravel digging. An old industrial area transformed the gardeners into a flower and plant splendor. Now pond marshes and water lilies are blooming in the ponds, along the banks and the chain of islands that separates the artificial ponds from the dike pond fed with groundwater, a lush vegetation thrives. This area also serves as a bird sanctuary.
To the lake plate is followed by the noise barrier of the adjacent motorway A46 a wide flowers and grassy meadow, which changes color and appearance depending on the season. For many insects it is a true paradise, as well as the Lake District, which also offers the colorful iridescent dragonflies and the numerous waterfowl habitat. A good overview of these biotopes offers the old flood dike, which was built in 1573 for Stoffeln and rediscovered by the Südpark planners. The dike is a welcome vantage point in the almost flat parking area and crowned with a panoramic restaurant.
