Chapel was not accessible during our visit.
We were able to meet Bruno van Eguisheim on the pleasant square. It is in the center of the fountain's framework. He was made pope in 1049 under the name Leo IX and is better known as the traveling pope. Conciliatory, he traveled through medieval Europe for the restoration of the Church.

Adjacent to the castle of the Counts of Eguisheim, this small church houses the relics of Pope Leo IX.
The chapel, whose work began in 1888 and was consecrated in 1894, is located in the courtyard of the castle. The building is in neo-Romanesque style and on its facade stands the statue of San Leone IX. Visible on the roof and on the bell, however, are the stork nests that come here to reproduce.
The interior is graceful and preserves several frescoes and decorations illuminated by the light that filters through the stained glass windows.

Beautiful chapel located in the medieval center of Eguisheim.
Built on the site of the old watchtower in neo-Romanesque style, the Saint-Léon chapel was consecrated in 1894 and dedicated to Saint Leon. Inside, on the vault, 11th-century style medallions were painted by Martin, depicting 7 scenes from the life of Saint Leon. The chapel's 6 stained-glass windows each depict two saints from Alsace, many of whom come from the family of the Counts of Eguisheim.

Eguisheim is proud of its Bruno, who resided on the papal throne in Rome almost 1000 years ago as Leo IX. He was also canonized, so it is not surprising that this chapel was built in his honor.
