    TERROIR MARKET - MARKET HALL / Marché couvert, Colmar
    Built in 1865, this brick building with a metal roof truss served multiple purposes until it found its first commercial vocation as a sales hall. Around 20 traders welcome you there to offer you quality products: fruit and vegetables, butchery, sausages, cheese factory, bakery-pastry shop, fishing, and other terroir delicacies.

        Between 1863 and 1865, the architect Louis-Michael Boltz built the hall from brick and sandstone. Inside, the roof is supported by a steel frame on cast iron columns.
        This is a typical construction for the Second Empire under Napoleon III.
        The original main entrances are on the canal side. So the farmers could drive directly to the market hall with their barges and unload their vegetables conveniently. Today the loading ramps are used for lush flower decorations along the leeks.
        About 20 traders have their stalls here, selling fruit and vegetables, meat, sausage products, cheese, bakery-confectionery, fishery and other local delicacies.
        It also has a small restaurant inside and on the terrace over the leeks.
        Very clean and well-kept, the selection of cheeses is sensational.

                  Inaugurated in 1865, this hall is the work of the architect Louis-Michel Boltz, who also designed the Colmar Municipal Theater (1849). A veritable island, the market hall is surrounded by three streets and the leek, which enabled the gardeners to bring their produce directly in flat-bottomed boats. The choice of materials used: brick, iron and cast iron, testifies to Colmar's transition to the industrial age. Since its restoration in 2010, Colmar's covered market has once again hosted a permanent market, supplemented by outdoor stalls every Thursday.

                  In the southwest corner of the covered market hall is an alcove, a fountain, surmounted by a statue of a small winemaker. This bronze work by Auguste Bartholdi was erected in 1869. Replaced by an identical copy in 1986, the original statue was deposited in the Bartholdi Museum.

                                The market hall (Marché Couvert) in and of itself has a lot of flair and offers many culinary and visual attractions. But my personal favorite is an hour on the terrace, directly above the water of the Lauch river, where you can treat yourself to Tarte Flambée and Edelzwicker while the boats carrying tourists cruise past.

                                  On Tuesdays and Wednesdays the market is open from 8am to 6pm. Thursday from 7am to 6pm. There is also an outdoor market on Thursdays. Open Friday from 8am to 7pm. Saturday from 8am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 2pm.
