The fountain:
Depth from skirt to bottom is 102 meters. It is fed by two springs at a depth of 101 meters and by seepage water.

The construction of the well was necessary because the fortress had previously been dependent on water supplies from Würzburg or a water supply from Höchberg, which could not be maintained in the event of a siege.

The shaft was built by hand around the year 1200. The diameter at the mouth is 2 meters. The shaft is walled up to a depth of 75 meters, then hewn out of the rock. It widens to 4 meters in diameter at the bottom. The excavation resulted in 350 cubic meters of excavation. The work lasted eight to ten years.

The Well Temple:
The structural enclosure of the fountain was built by Jakob Wolff the Elder on behalf of Julius Echter around 1600 to protect the water from contamination. It is an octagonal central building, which is decorated on the outside with the heads of mythical creatures as gargoyles. The bronze figure of Fortuna can be seen on the roof. A stone fountain basin is attached to the east side. Above this is the gargoyle in the middle as a figure of Samson fighting the lion. Based on the biblical story, he tears the predator's mouth open. To the left, Hieronymus can be seen with a tame lion from which he had previously pulled a thorn from its paw. To Samson's right, the praying Daniel is spared the beasts of prey in the lions' den. The biblical representations are intended to embody the virtues of helpfulness (Jerome), courage (Samson) and trust in God (Daniel).

In the Baroque period, the fountain temple was rebuilt with a chunky stone mantle to protect it from being destroyed by cannon attacks. It was not until 1937 that the building underneath was rediscovered and uncovered. The roof was reconstructed in 1938 based on an engraving by Johann Leypold from 1604, which shows the original structure in detail.
