This trail is a portion of the proposed European Continental Divide Trail (ECDT, Europäischer Wasserscheideweg) along the Mediterranean - Adriatic Continental Divide (Wasserscheide). To the west of Bocchetta di Aurona Pass and the north of Simplon Pass, water drains to the Mediterranean. To the east of the Bocchetta di Aurona and the south of Simplon Pass, water drains to the Adriatic.
