The prosperity of the port city was based on the cloth and wool trade with England and Scotland. These relationships were strengthened in 1444 by the wedding of the city governor Wolfert VI van Borsele with the Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of the Scottish King James I. 1561 emerged at the harbor the so-called Scottish houses of the Scottish trading colony with magnificent Renaissance gables.

In 1572 Veere participated in the uprising against the Duke of Alba and then played a leading role in the Dutch Republic. The Orangemen now used the harbor as a naval port.

In 1668 a fire damaged the late Gothic cross basilica.

The Napoleonic continental blockade interrupted the trade in England and Veere harbor served from then on only as a fishing port. In 1809, the city was bombarded by the English and the church further damaged. In 1811, the French converted the oversized church into an army hospital.

Between 1958 and 1961, the Veersegat dam was built as part of the Deltaplan. On April 27, 1961, the Veersegat was finally closed with the lowering of the last slide and the connection Veeres interrupted to the open sea. This forced the fishing fleet to move to Colijnsplaat on the Oosterschelde.

From April 28th to September 28th, the Rondje Pontje ferry service runs between Kamperland and Veere. A ferry for pedestrians and cyclists. The options and departure times are shown on this page.

A ferry connection between Kamperland and Veere already existed in the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the 20th century, the L-shaped ferry dam and basalt slope were built at the gates of Kamperland. The pier still stands here today and both the dam and the pier have since been declared a national monument. From 1930, the Zuidvliet was used as a ferry on this route. It has been retired for years, but you can admire it in the museum harbor in Zierikzee. After the construction of the Veerse Gatdam, which connects Walcheren and Noord-Beveland, the ferry service was discontinued, but a bicycle-foot ferry now runs again during the tourist season.
