In the historic city centre of Veere there are still many houses, streets and buildings that date back to the 15th and 16th century. The old Town Hall on the Market is a historic building and you will also find the tourist information point there. Handy when you are looking for more information about other sights in Veere.

The port town of Veere exudes a very special charm - not least because the city is almost completely surrounded by water. The town center is historically beautiful with the large church Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk from the 15th century and the tranquil cobblestone alleys. They are surrounded by restored gabled houses and almost all lead to the central market square. Lovingly painted doors with flowers around them create a beautiful cityscape. The biotope around the old fortress wall begins behind the small marina - a perfect place for a walk in the countryside.

A settlement with a mill, harbor dike and individual houses in what is now the local area was first mentioned at the end of the 13th century. Even back then there seems to have been some kind of ferry to Kamperland. Veere experienced its first heyday from the 15th century onwards, primarily through the cloth trade. In the period that followed, it was the business connections to Great Britain that ensured wealth in the city. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Veere was one of the most powerful cities in the Netherlands. The decline came with Napoleon and the associated ban on trade with England and Scotland. Until the Veerse Dam was built, it was fishing that fed the people of Veere. But that ended in 1963 with the separation from the sea. Today Veere is a popular tourist resort, without its own oversized accommodation complexes.
