The pilgrimage and mercy chapel "Maria in der Not" has chosen a modest place. Far too seldom does someone stray here and be surprised by the idyll of this beautiful spot in the Niederdonk district of Meerbusch-Büderich. However, those who have found their way here are happy to return. "There is probably not an hour of the day when you will find the chapel empty," says Pastor Michael Berning. “People come here at any time of the day. At Mass on Wednesday mornings you have to come early to get a seat.”

With the renovation, the chapel appears to be following a ritual. In the past it has often been rebuilt, rebuilt or expanded. There are various stories about its origin. According to the vernacular, it was once a hermitage. Another source dates its construction to the year 1542, when it is said to have been built by the owner of the nearby Dyckhof. It is mentioned in documents from the 17th century as a chapel to the "Painful Mother", "Maria in der Not" or "Piepers Kapellchen" - where this last name came from is still a mystery to this day. It is no mystery, however, why the chapel forms the actual heart of Büderich, as Cardinal Meisner already confirmed. Not only does it connect the two churches of St. Mauritius and Heilig Geist, it also connects locals with visitors, strangers with residents. This cordial character offers everyone the start of a day of relaxation, a "wellness day" for the soul.
