        It was 1425 when John IV of Gruuthuse began building a mansion on the Dijver Canal. The Gruuthuse family earned their money with grut (a type of herbal mixture). In the Middle Ages, grut was a component of beer. Everyone drank beer - as a result, the family had a lot of money and thus a lot of influence in Burgundian Bruges.

        Bruges offers many exciting places to discover. More than 30 churches (around half of them in the old town), numerous museums, art exhibitions and impressive squares entice many tourists to linger. It was not just "See Bruges and die" that attracted numerous guests to the city in Flanders. The combination of pretty old houses and attractive canals is simply worth seeing.

        Bruges has had another highlight since May 2019.
        Centrally located, you can experience a journey back in time to the Middle Ages in Bruges. The Gruuthuse Museum - I can reveal this in advance - not only leaves art fans and time travelers like me enthusiastic.

        The Gruuthuse Museum was closed for around 5 years, around 9 million were invested in the redesign and the reopening of the Gruuthuse family's city palace was celebrated for a whole week in May.

        Let's travel back in time.
        It was 1425 when John IV of Gruuthuse began building a mansion on the Dijver Canal. The Gruuthuse family earned their money with grut (a kind of herbal mixture).         Even after Grut was no longer used, the family was allowed to levy taxes on beer. This is why the family collected valuable works of art, tapestries and historical documents over several centuries. The city palace has served as a museum since 1888. The last extensive restoration took place in recent years – I think it was worth it!
