The measures are carried out in four construction phases from west to east. The renovation of the west choir (Willibaldschor) began in April 2019. This work has largely been completed. From 2020 to 2021, the renovation of the nave and the transept is due. During this time the cathedral is completely closed. The restoration of the east choir is scheduled for 2022 and the towers with the chapter sacristy for 2023.

The Cathedral of Eichstätt is the cathedral church of the Catholic diocese of Eichstätt in Bavaria. As early as the eighth century, St. Willibald is said to have built a first stone church here. The present church was built mainly at the time of the high and late gothic and was completed in 1718 by a baroque west facade. Together with the cloister and the zweischiffigen Mortuarium the cathedral belongs to the most important medieval architectural monuments of Bavaria. Various architectural styles, numerous works of art and the remains of St. Willibald make the cathedral a main attraction in Eichstätt. In the west choir - the Willibaldschor - greets the monumental seat figure of the holy Willibald, manufactured 1514. On the back of the seat figure rest in a marble urn of the Baroque altar the bones of the diocese founder. In the northern transept, a modern monument commemorates the Bishop of Eichstätt, Gebhardt I, who, as Pope Viktor II, guided the destinies of Christendom from 1055 to 1057. Undoubtedly the most famous work of art in Eichstätt Cathedral is the eleven-meter-high, figure-rich "Pappenheimer Altar". The most revered statue of the cathedral is the "Buchenhüller Madonna".
