The partially rebuilt Roman fort is freely accessible in summer. In winter you have to forego a tour of the reconstructed parts, but you can still visit the outside area.

It's hard to believe that this facility was built around the year 90. Initially as a wooden and earth fort to ensure the protection and maintenance of the nearby Limes. Almost 80 years later, the old fort was replaced by stone buildings. In the middle of the 3rd century, like most other Roman forts north of the Danube, it was destroyed by an Alemannic invasion.

Ideal for a short walk during a bike ride. The Roman fort Castra Vetoniana is located above the town of Pfünz in the Altmühltal. The auxiliary cohort stationed here was responsible for securing the nearby Limes. The fort was built around 90 AD, today the northern gate, a corner tower and part of the defensive wall have been rebuilt.

The fort is located south of today's village on the so-called "Kirchberg", a pointed mountain tongue, 42 meters above the Altmühltal. It formed a rectangle 189 meters long and 145 meters wide and corresponded to an area of 2.75 hectares. The mountain tongue is surrounded by three valleys, which resulted in a strategically optimal location for the fort.

The Pfünzer Kastell is a 189 x 145 m parallelogram with a footprint of 2.75 ha. The fortification consisted of a double trench carved into the rock on three sides and a simple one on the east side. Bridges were left for the passage of gates. The total width of the trenches was 15.5 m and the depth was 1.6 m.
