The Hooglandse Kerk is a Gothic church building in the Dutch city of Leiden. Because the nave and tower are lower than the choir and transept, the church has a very characteristic silhouette. The Hooglandse Kerk is in use by the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. The history of the Hooglandse Kerk begins when the bishop of Utrecht, Gwijde van Avesnes, granted permission on 20 December 1314 for the construction of a wooden chapel on the 'Hooge Land' as side church of the parish church of Leiderdorp. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Pancratius († ca. 300). A few decades later, this chapel was replaced by a simple stone church with a turret, but with the strong economic growth of Leiden, the need for a much larger church quickly increased.

An imposing late Gothic cruciform basilica.
At the beginning of the 14th century, the Hooglandse Kerk was no more than a wooden chapel, belonging to the parish of Leiderdorp.
This chapel was soon replaced by a simple stone church with a tower. As the city of Leiden became more important and larger, the need for a larger church on the Hooge Land grew. However, the construction of the church was never completed due to a lack of money.
