The ponds were probably created by Cistercians in the 12th century for fish farming. The Großer Paul pond was already designated as a natural monument in need of special protection in 1933. Between 1987 and 1993 it became dry due to the brown coal mining and had to be irrigated artificially. All ponds are connected by ditches. The entire area has been protected since 1997 because many amphibians and water birds that need to be protected find their habitat here. The area was transferred to the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund Foundation in 2004. The foundation purchased additional areas and today ensures that the habitat for animals and plants is preserved through hydraulic engineering and forestry measures.
