Deep in the Belgian Ardennes, near the village of Lichtenborn, a modest stream begins that later grows into the magical river we know as the Geul. From this inconspicuous origin, the water makes its way through the green hills and fields, like a lifeline that infuses the landscape with life and stories.
The river flows into Belgium, winding through charming villages, where time sometimes still seems to stand still. The people here live to the rhythm of the Geul, its rippling waters providing a constant background melody to their daily lives.
When the Geul reached the Dutch border, a new landscape unfolded. The rolling South Limburg welcomes the river with open arms. De Geul meanders through picturesque towns such as Gulpen and Valkenburg, each with their own unique charm and history.
Valkenburg, with its ancient ruins and mysterious caves, offers a moment of reflection. De Geul has already had a long journey behind the carpet, but she is not done yet. From Valkenburg she continues her way, past idyllic landscapes, until she finally reaches her destination at the village of Voulwames.
Here, near Meerssen, the Geul joins the powerful Maas. It's a humble end for such a graceful river. She supplies her waters to the Meuse, which she takes on an even greater journey. But the stories and beauty of the Geul remain, etched in the landscape and in the hearts of those who have been lucky enough to walk its banks.
