The Domnapf, seldom also the cathedral bowl, is a large bowl made of sandstone in front of the Imperial Cathedral in the city of Speyer (Rhineland-Palatinate). According to tradition, after each new election of a bishop, it is to be filled with wine "for the whole people". The bowl holds 1580 liters and bears a Latin inscription. (Wikipedia)

Since its construction in the 14th century, it has played an important role in the penal system: anyone who violated municipal law and fled to the cathedral bowl was protected from prosecution.

The cathedral bowl has long since ceased to fulfill these historical functions. However, a popular medieval custom has been maintained up to modern times. On special church occasions, the cathedral bowl is filled with wine. With a capacity of over 1500 liters, many citizens and guests can sample the grape juice. The last time this happened was on the 950th anniversary of the consecration of Speyer Cathedral on October 2nd, 2011.
