Safari Ostrich Farm Oudtshoorn is a working ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn, located on the Garden Route.
The tours focus on a fantastic, interactive encounter with ostriches. You'll learn that an ostrich egg can carry about 100 kg, and you can even test this yourself by standing on one. Feeding the ostriches is a must-see attraction 😉.
History of the ostrich industry: When wearing ostrich feathers became a fashion trend in the late 19th century, the region experienced its heyday. The trend lasted for over 40 years, and during that time, magnificent mansions were built by the wealthy ostrich barons of the Oudtshoorn ostrich farms. Many of these so-called "feather palaces" remain. After World War I, fashion changed, and the ostrich industry collapsed. A few decades later, it experienced a revival due to the popularity of ostrich leather. Even today, it remains one of the most expensive leathers. Ostriches are now also farmed for their meat (similar to steak, but slightly sweeter in flavor).
