Statue King Albert1

This monument is a free-standing bronze equestrian statue, on a high pedestal of blocks of bluestone. The plinth contains a reinforcing construction of brick and reinforced concrete. The foundations were installed by entrepreneurs Van de Kerckhove and Gilson. The pedestal is a design by architect Jan-Albert De Bondt.

The equestrian statue was erected thanks to funds collected by an action committee. Among the gifts were some twenty blocks of 'blue bluestone from Ecaussines', which were intended as a pedestal for the monument. The concrete elaboration of the image was determined by a competition, organized on June 20, 1935, in which all Belgian artists from East Flanders were allowed to participate. They were free in the elaboration of the work, both visually and in terms of ideology. However, people were obliged to work with Belgian materials. A total of 30 designs were submitted. In the end, the jury unanimously chose Domien Ingels' design.
