There is a considerable difference in elevation between the (bourgeois) Old Town and the Freiheit (Freedom) and the Burgberg (Castle Hill). This also means that the city is characterized by numerous staircases and sunken lanes. The Red Steps run along a hillside and connect the upper end of Burgstraße with Freiheit between the Evangelical Afra Church and the Outer Burgtor. Where the Red Steps meet Freiheit, there is a particularly impressive view of the ensemble consisting of the Outer Burgtor, the towers of the cathedral, and the gable of the Prelate's House.

The Red Steps lead from the upper Burgstrasse along Leinewebergasse to Freiheit. After the 16th century, the stepped path to Afraberg was called "the path to St. Afra" or simply "the path." In the 17th century, it was called "Schulsteig," but at the same time, it was also referred to as "am Domberge." Around 1750, steps existed only in the upper and steeper section, starting approximately at the property at Freiheit 4.
The stepped path had other names over time, none of which were apparently "official." The change in names is particularly evident in the 18th century. In the second half of the 18th century, the steps were renovated using red Pirna sandstone, and thus in 1788 they were given the name "the Afranian church or red steps." In 1792 and 1795 they were called "the so-called red steps." In 1802 and 1804 they were called "the red or Afranian steps."
