Haus Horst, also known as Burg Horst, is a historically important former knight's residence in Essen-Horst, located on the northern bank of the Ruhr. The complex, which is now protected as an architectural and archaeological monument, covers around 150×150 meters. Only parts of the original structure remain, including two round towers, the curtain wall of the outer bailey from the 17th century, which is also known as the tournament court, and the former dairy from the Renaissance period around 1680. The former chapel from 1359, which is now Used for residential purposes, it has also been preserved and is characterized by its Romanesque vault and pointed arch windows.
In addition, the so-called Murder Cross, a low stone cross with an inscription, commemorates the builder Conrad Fischer, who was murdered in 1717, and has been a listed building since 2008. Another significant monument nearby is the Ruhr Fighter Memorial, which commemorates the victims of the battles to establish the first republic in Germany.
