At this point, French soldiers first met German soldiers on the HWK and there was a shooting. It fell the first soldiers, which followed according to official estimates 30,000 in the war years 1914-1918. The mountain got the notorious epithet "man-eater".

A Boyau is a connecting trench between two lines of trenches. Through such trenches, soldiers advanced to the front lines, wounded were brought behind the lines in this way. On the left is the egg position, which marks the furthest advance of the Germans on the Hartmannsweilerkopf (they held them from January 9 to March 5, 1915).
