"If you don't want to build dikes, you have to give way", was the commandment of the farmers who had been settling in the Vier- und Marschlande for centuries and had to protect their land and farm from the floods of the Elbe.

However, the history of dyke construction on the river also tells of devastating dyke breaches. The water shot through these with enormous force into the hinterland and washed out deep depressions, the so-called bracks. They remained behind as relics behind the rebuilt dykes and are among the typical landscape features of the Elbe Marshes. Many of the bracks have been filled in or silted up by themselves. Its former location can still be seen today by the meanders of the old dykes.

The Kiebitzbrack in the south-eastern Vier- und Marschlande, which gave the nature reserve its name, has been preserved almost originally.
