The southernmost point of Hamburg is the "Krauel" and here it is located directly on the Elbe near "Dichkilometer 8.5". Unfortunately, visually it is not a particularly spectacular place, but geographically it is a highlight.
A narrow “beaten path” leads from the Kraueler Deich to the small Elbe sandy beach. From here you have beautiful views over the Elbe.
The Krauel is a field name and a settlement on today's Stromelbe in Hamburg and formed a wedge-shaped incision in the Neuengamme district until it was built as an island between 1314 and 1344. The Gose Elbe began here with three tributaries up to the dike of today's Stromelbe.
In terms of ownership, the Krauel was divided between the West Krauel (approx. 190 hectares), which was administered in both cities by Hamburg and Lübeck from 1420 and has only belonged to Hamburg since 1868, and the so-called Holstein East Krauel (approx. 170 hectares). This part now forms the Ost-Krauel district and is located in the Kirchwerder district. The West-Krauel is located in the Neuengamme district and in the Kirchwerder district.

I had expected the usual Elbschlick with fortification stones. That is why I was very surprised when a fine sandy beach and a great panorama of the Elbe and Lower Saxony opened up behind a group of trees. This is probably only the case at low tide - it is therefore advisable to check the tide times before visiting.
