The town hall of Amiens is an impressive building built in the second half of the eighteenth century. The town hall was built on the site of a Roman amphitheater. Originally, the square was separated from the town hall by a large fence. This fencing was removed at the end of the last century to make the square available to the public. At the town hall you can see statues of King Louis the Sixth and Bishop Geoffrey. The town hall is beautifully illuminated in the evenings.

#11 - Jules Verne Member of the Parish Council

I was a councilor in Amiens for 16 years from 1888 to 1904, so I regularly visited this town hall, which was built in the 18th century and has been enlarged and remodeled several times.

In 1888, I suggested that Frédéric Petit, the mayor at the time, put me on his list. After an intensive election campaign, I was elected to the 4th committee, which deals with cultural and social issues: education, museums, libraries, theatres, festivals, street names, public relations. In addition, I take on social responsibility at the school inspectorate and the charity office.

As the financial manager of the theatre, I am also in charge of the fairs and it was I who inaugurated the new municipal circus in 1889.

During my electoral mandate I am very interested in urban planning and try to maintain the aesthetic quality of the city. I always strive to clarify questions in order to make informed decisions. This is an expansive endeavor with meetings almost daily, but I enjoy it and find inspiration for some of my novels.

Today a reception room of the town hall is named after me.
