City Hall, Murten
The building, which is now used as the town hall, was rebuilt in 1416 after a town fire. Between 1748-50 it was rebuilt and enlarged.
In 1816 the baroque tower with the clock was added. The ground floor was formerly used as a storage room and is now used as a representative reception hall.

Murten in the Middle Ages
Today's town was built around 1170 on the southern shore of the lake. It was founded by the Dukes of Zähringen, who claimed the imperial fief and wanted to secure their western outskirts with another border fortress. When after their extinction Murten became independent in 1218, it was later fortified with a wall. In 1255, during the interregnum period, the city came under the protection of Savoy, which was later disputed by the Habsburgs for a short time. Various alliances with neighboring towns secured Murten's position, which gradually expanded and over time took precedence over the surrounding villages. In 1416 the mostly wooden houses in Murten fell victim to a city fire. Rebuilt from stone, it entered European historical consciousness in 1476 on the occasion of the victorious battle of the Confederates against Charles the Bold in front of its walls. A year earlier, Murten had to surrender to the Bernese and Friborg and from then on formed a common rule of the two estates. They recognized the old city rights and had Murten administered alternately by a mayor, who had his official residence in the castle built by the Savoyards.
