Today's Berntor dates from the second half of the 18th century. The master builder was Niklaus Hebler, who built Bern's clock tower. The movement was made by the Ducommun brothers from La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1712. The three weight stones are cannonballs from the Murten battle and have to be pulled up by hand every 24 hours. The dial of the watch has only one hour hand. It shows an oath hand, which should indicate that Murten was a free imperial city.

Berntor, Murten
The Berntor was first mentioned in 1239. It was completely destroyed in the Battle of Murten and had to be rebuilt several times later. The current Berntor dates from the second half of the 18th century, when it was built by the Bernese master builder Niklaus Hebler, who also renovated the Bernese clock tower.
At the top of the Berntor is a clock mechanism made by the Ducommun brothers in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1712. The three weight stones - cannonballs from the Battle of Murten - have to be raised by hand every 24 hours. The clock face on the outside has only one hour hand. It represents a swearing hand, which indicates that Murten was a free imperial city.
