Carl Hagenbeck's sons, Heinrich and Lorenz, continued their father's life's work together after his death in 1913. Between 1922 and 1931 modern zoos were built in Chicago, Detroit and Paris according to Heinrich's plans. Under his leadership, the Hagenbeck Zoo was significantly expanded and redesigned in 1937. Kaiser-Friedrich-Strasse, which until then had divided the park, was included. In the same year he inaugurated one of the most modern elephant enclosures in Europe to date. His brother Lorenz founded the new "Circus Carl Hagenbeck" in 1916, with which he traveled to all continents - except Australia - and thus carried the Hagenbeck name all over the world.

When Hagenbeck Zoo was almost completely destroyed in World War II in 1943, Heinrich and his son Carl-Heinrich began rebuilding it. Heinrich Hagenbeck did not live to see the reopening in 1945, his son continued to run the zoo.

The bronze relief was created by the sculptor A.W. Goebel.
