Waldsassen has a pretty old town with beautiful Baroque buildings. A stroll through the charming streets is definitely worth it. Further highlights of the city are the monastery basilica, the monastery library, the nature discovery garden of the Waldsassen Abbey and the Stiftlandmuseum.

Cultural center in the Stiftland

Waldsassen in the Tirschenreuth district is considered the cultural center of the Upper Palatinate Stiftland. The town's origins date back to before 1133. Margrave Diepold III of Vohburg-Cham brought monks to Waldsassen to found a monastery there. It subsequently developed into one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in Bavaria. The economic and industrial boom began with the opening of the Wiesau-Eger railway line (1865). Waldsassen is, among other things, the location of the bicycle manufacturer Ghost and the Lamberts glassworks, Germany's only glassworks for hand-blown flat glass. The sights in Waldsassen include the collegiate basilica with Germany's largest church and monastery crypt and the extensive baroque relic treasure, the Waldsassen monastery with its collegiate library and the "Kappl" Trinity Church.

Around the year 1133, Margrave Diepold III founded the monastery, brought Cistercian monks to Waldsassen and endowed it with possessions. The monastery quickly gained in importance and was of great service to the colonization of the northern district, which extended as far as Bohemia. The settlement of cloth makers from 1614 onwards led to the development of a bourgeois settlement within the monastery walls. The abbey castle from the 15th century is the only medieval building in Waldsassen. The first monastery with the Romanesque church fell into disrepair due to the chaos of war. The immigration of builders and artists that started in 1682, combined with the construction of the new monastery and church, brought an upswing for the town.
