    Friedrich VII Karl Christian was the second and only surviving son (his elder brother died on the day he was born) of the then Hereditary Prince Christian Friedrich, later King Christian VIII of Denmark, and his first wife Princess Charlotte Friederike zu Mecklenburg, the youngest daughter of Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg. His parents' marriage ended in divorce in 1810 after his mother had an affair with her singing teacher, the court musician Jean Baptiste Édouard Du Puy. Friedrich never saw his mother again. In 1815 his father married Caroline Amalie von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg, with whom he had no further children. As the successor of his cousin Friedrich VI. Christian Friedrich was little involved in politics and devoted himself to science and art together with his second wife. During his father's travels, Friedrich stayed in Copenhagen and was educated by teachers chosen by his uncle.

      From 1826 to 1828 he undertook an educational journey through Europe, during which he also visited the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

      At the age of 17, Friedrich was inherited from his uncle Friedrich VI. engaged to his youngest daughter Wilhelmine of Denmark. The wedding of the bride and groom of the same age, with which the two lines of the royal family were to be united, took place on November 1, 1828 in the Castle Church of Christiansborg in Copenhagen. The marriage was unhappy and remained childless. After six years Friedrich and Wilhelmine separated. Friedrich was banished to Jægerspris Castle by his father-in-law and shortly thereafter sent on a journey to Iceland. The marriage was divorced on September 4, 1837.

      As a member and from 1841 leader of the Royal and Nordic Antiquities Society, he was able to pursue his interest in archeology and had prehistoric burial mounds around Jægerspris excavated from 1834.

This marriage also remained childless and was not happy. Not long after the marriage, Friedrich met the dancer Louise Christine Rasmussen, who became his mistress and, in 1850 as Countess Danner, also his morganatic wife. In 1845 he presented her with Jægerspris Castle.
