Via Kotteritz we went towards Paditz to the Paditzer Schanzen. They are an opencast mining hole (located south of Altenburg in the Pleißetal) and the porphyrite rock was mined here, which has been used for grinding stones and for historical buildings since the early Middle Ages. It can still be found on many old buildings, such as Altenburg Castle. Slightly remote from paths, it is not suitable for cyclists. Sturdy shoes are required when hiking. Caution is advised with children as there is a risk of falling and slipping.
