The 'Ravelijn op den Zoom' is one of the few remains of the famous fortifications of Bergen op Zoom. The Bergse fortress was an important part of the Zuiderwaterlinie.

When you visit the Ravelijn, the guides will show you around this pentagonal island and you will visit the casemates. They also tell about the history of the fortress; how did it develop, what was its function, what did it look like and what was the connection between the bastions, the ravelins, the lunettes and the mine tunnels? And also: what was the function of the remarkable underground herb chambers? You will also hear more about more recent history.

In 1931, the Ravelin on den Zoom was already restored. The earthen dam that was there at the time made way for a wooden bridge with an access gate. But many trees and shrubs grew on the ravelin. They were removed in 2014. As a result, you can see the original shape again. At the end of 2018, the ravelin was renovated again. Now you can reach the ravelin via the floating bridge over the water of Bergen op Zoom, the Pielekeswater. Is the city gate in Bergen op Zoom open? Then you can enter. Ravelijn Op den Zoom, built by Menno van Coehoorn in 1703. This is the only, completely surviving defense work of Bergen op Zoom fortified town, part of the water line. It was restored in 1931.
