The Schwärzer house in Grassemann
Up until the 19th century, single-storey timber construction prevailed in the Fichtelgebirge. The roofs were covered with shingles, the facades with boards. At exposed altitudes, one-ridge farms were usually built, in which dwellings, stables and barns were arranged side by side under a roof ridge.
The Schwärzer house in Grassemann is a typical example of this type of construction. It was built in 1698 as a log building and has survived to this day with only two major changes: a black kitchen was installed in 1760; A second threshing floor was added in the middle of the 19th century and a litter shed was built. The tiled stove in the living room is a breech-loader and was stoked from the black kitchen. It not only had a heating function, but also a cooking function.
