The Itero del Castillo Bridge, recently restored by the Junta de Castilla y Léon, was built in the time of King Alfonso VI, to help pilgrims cross the mighty Pisuerga River. It was made at the beginning of the 12th century, in Romanesque style, although it had modifications in the Gothic period. It has a ridged profile with 11 arcades or eyes, some pointed and others semicircular, with triangular breakwaters upstream of the Pisuerga and quadrangular ones downstream. This bridge, always belonging to Itero del Castillo, had a great strategic importance, for which it was highly disputed in the Middle Ages, as it was the limit of the county of Castile, and which currently perpetuates itself as the border of the provinces of Burgos and Palencia.
