The Syrtza chiefs lived in Berum Castle, one of the most important sites in East Frisian history, around 1310. The first Count of East Frisia, Ulrich Circsena von Greetsiel, inherited it and built a moated castle here. Over the following generations, it developed into the most magnificently furnished castle in East Frisia (1665). It subsequently became the widow's seat of the East Frisian royal family.
Unfortunately, Berum Castle was razed under Frederick the Great and its valuable inventory was auctioned off, but the mighty outer bailey with tower and gate remained.
Day trips to the East Frisian Islands, long walks, cycling in the forest, in the moor or on the nearby coast are possible from here. A stone's throw from Berum is the Lütetsburg moated castle with its famous English Park.

The history of Berum Castle:

It is unclear exactly when construction of the castle began. The first documentary evidence dates the chief's castle to the year 1310. It is not known how long this family had been residing here at that time.
In the 15th century the Cirksena inherited the castle. In 1443, Count Ulrich I had the existing castle expanded into a palace with a three-wing main and outer bailey and celebrated his wedding here on June 1, 1455 with Theda, the granddaughter of his great rival Focko Ukena. Since then it has played an important role in East Frisian history. In 1475–1481 Alf, the son of Count Gerd von Oldenburg, was imprisoned at Berum Castle after an invasion of East Frisia.

Berum Castle has been privately owned by our family since 1970. Starting with just one room temporarily set up as a guest room, the guest house in Berum Castle was furnished and operated with a lot of effort and attention to detail by our parents and in-laws Margit and Hans-Heinrich von Oppeln. Since 2019, the further development of the castle has been in our hands and presents us with new challenges every day.

We – Annika and Tido von Oppeln – believe in quality, social responsibility and because so many global issues determine our time, we rely on local partners and suppliers.

We want to operate in an ecologically compatible, sustainable and social manner; For example, we have our laundry ironed and ironed by Birko, a charity for the disabled in nearby Tidofeld. We primarily use regional products and support the farmers in our region.
