The Baltic Sea resort of Heringsdorf is an independent municipality and a seaside resort on the island of Usedom in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). It was created in 2005 through the merger of the municipalities of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin and, together with the Polish town of Świnoujście (Swinemünde), forms the focus of tourism in the east of Usedom. The neighboring seaside resorts of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin grew together over time to such an extent that in the 20th century they were also known as "The Three Sisters".
