Paul Walden (Pauls Valdens, 1863–1957) was a Latvian chemist who did pioneering work in stereochemistry. This monument consists of the two enantiomers of a chiral molecule on either side of a reflective surface. It looks to be malic acid.

The monument to Paul Walden in Kronvalda Park is a fascinating tribute to one of Latvia's most important chemists. Born in 1863, Walden was best known for his research into stereochemistry and electrochemistry, and carried out pioneering work that was well received in scientific circles. The structure of the monument, with its symbolic molecular connections, beautifully captures the essence of his work - here science comes alive and almost tangible.
