The stream has its source under the name Magnone west of Lake Tenno at an altitude of 2138 m asl, below the Corno di Pichea, which is part of the Garda mountains, in the municipality of Tenno. It is formed from several rivulets whose runoff is heavily dependent on rainfall and which are therefore dry most of the time. These only carry water when the snow melts and in the rainy months of spring and autumn. It then flows eastwards, mostly beneath the surface, through the Val Magnone before turning south at Ville del Monte. Here it also takes in seepage water from Lake Tenno, which is noticeable above all in the significantly increased runoff. It then flows through the lower Val Magnone, which is of fluvioglacial origin and has been eroded by the Magnone over time. The towns of Ville del Monte and Tenno on the orographic left side of the valley and Pranzo on the right side lie above the stream bed on partly terraced slopes. At the height of Tenno, it plunges over a glacier step into a gorge almost 100 m deep and 70 m long, forming the Cascate del Varone (Varone waterfalls). From here it flows through the municipality of Riva del Garda to its mouth, changing its name to Varone. In the lower reaches, the Varone stream bed is built up until shortly before its mouth at Punta Lido in Lake Garda. In two places, the stream bed, which is partly completely concreted, even bridges two streets in the city of Riva.[3]
