The largest thermal water spring in Karlovy Vary, the Vřídlo spring, is the hottest thermal spring in the Czech Republic with a temperature of 73 degrees Celsius. In the Vřídelní fountain in the Vřídelní Colonnade, which is covered by a glass dome, the fountain shoots up to twelve meters into the air thanks to the pressure and the content of gaseous carbon dioxide. The mineral-rich water comes from a depth of about two kilometers. In the area of the Vřídlo spring colonnade there are three drinking points with not only the 73-degree hot water, but also spring water cooled to temperatures of 57 and 41 degrees.

Originally, only light canopies and pavilions protected the hot spring. They could easily be rebuilt after the spring's repeated, unexpected, explosive eruptions. The first unified architectural design came in 1826, when the first Empire spring colonnade was built. In 1878 and 1879, a new cast-iron hot spring colonnade was built in pseudo-Renaissance style, designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. In 1939, however, the colonnade was dismantled due to corrosion and replaced by a temporary wooden colonnade for the next 27 years. The modern glass and concrete structure in functionalist style that can be seen here today was designed by Jaroslav Otruby and opened in 1975.

In the modern spa colonnade you can find the silvery, larger-than-life seated figure of Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health and purity. The snake that winds around her right hand symbolizes healing. The sculpture dates from 1879. Hygieia was one of the most frequently used symbols for the healing effects of the Karlovy Vary springs.
