After a long time of fallowing developed the Burghaldeverein, which was founded in 1865/68, the ruined area to a Bürgerpark and recreational area. The association, which involved all of the city's important families, laid out trails, planted hundreds of trees, and built buildings. The tree species were carefully selected, in part according to foliage color and crown shape. Soon, festivals and performances took place on the Burghalde. In 1870, the so-called guard house was built on the medieval ring wall in the north of the hill in Stein. It was designed in neo-Gothic style as an artificial ruin with internal flat roof and should serve as an apartment for a Burghaldewärter. He was to prevent the youth of the city in the evening met without supervision on the site and, for example, stones rolled down the slope. Because the flat roof had not proven itself, the building was supplemented in 1889 by a bullet made of wood and the striking roof top with the four Ecksturmerkern. In the guard house a catering for the club members was furnished. In 1894 a fountain was erected by the city at the western entrance. In 1908, an electricity supply was installed on the Burghalde, and a year later the pavilion on the west side was built as another covered dining room. For the 50th anniversary, the Burghaldeverein had 650 members. Known members were, among others, the architects Otto and Leonhard Heydecker, Adolf Leichtle, Maximilian Vicari or the blacksmith master Johann Abt (1869-1933), based on the work of the DTM racing team Abt Sportsline.
The National Socialists planned the construction of a Nazi order castle on the hill, which would have meant the demolition of all buildings and historic walls. The advancing World War helped avert the 1942 raised plans. In 1950, an open-air stage was created on the Burghalde. During the work, the late medieval castle gate was extended. The massive earth movements brought medieval and late Roman masonry to light.
Since 2004, the Allgäuer Burgenmuseum has been located in the warden's house, which was renovated in 2001. In addition to the museum, a fragrance and medicinal herb garden was created. In summer, guided tours are offered there from the station pharmacy. The museum is owned by the Allgäuer Burgenverein e. V. operated.
