The artificial pond was created in 1725, according to other sources between 1726 and 1755. Its approximately 80 meter long dam was built as an earth or rockfill dam. It dams the Steinfurtbach, which flows in from the north, which also drains the Elbingstalteich to the south and after a few meters flows into the Selke. The pond was of great importance for the operation of stamp mills, smelting works and mines in the area around Straßberg, further south-east. The water was routed to two stamp mills via an overflow ditch. However, as early as the middle of the 18th century, silver ore mining in the region was declining, which meant that the pond lost its original function and was used for fishing.

A repair was carried out in 1973/74.

The artificial pond is listed as a monument in the local register of monuments under the registration number 094 50012. The Elbingstalteich is also registered as a monument for Straßberg, probably by mistake, under number 107 25036.
