On the dam between the upper and lower Kiliansteich is the stamping point 211 of the Harzer hiking nobility. Both ponds are very idyllically situated in the Lower Harz water shelf around Straßberg. From here, many ponds can be combined in one hike.

Originally there was a storage cascade at the site of the dam, consisting of 4 ponds, one of which was mentioned in a document as early as 1610. From 1703, more Kilian ponds were built in connection with the mining in Straßberg.
Since two of the dams had already broken in 1901 and 1944 and the remaining one was in poor condition, the Saxony-Anhalt dam company built the Kiliansteich dam from 1989 to 1995 with a 25 m high and 210 m long rockfill dam.
