The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe, that is vast, rugged nature on the edge of land and water. The Drowned Land, as the name suggests, used to be inhabited. In the late Middle Ages, the Lordship of Saeftinghe was located there, with prosperous polders, villages and even a castle: Saeftinghe Castle. Nature, but also the strategic location - whoever owned Saeftinghe controlled access to the port of Antwerp - ultimately caused its downfall. Various storm surges in the 14th and 16th centuries devoured large parts of the reclaimed land. In the Eighty Years' War (16th century), the dikes were also deliberately breached to defend Antwerp. The Western Scheldt turned it into a vast salt marsh area again, the largest in Europe!

The area in a nutshell

Saeftinghe, that is 3600 hectares or 36 km² of brackish water salt marsh. It gives an impression of the primeval Zeeland landscape: life at the rhythm of the tide. The water of the Western Scheldt flows into the area at every high tide; at low tide the water drops again. The water reaches the dike via the three main channels that branch out into the area. In the Western Scheldt the fresh river water of the Scheldt is mixed with the salt water of the North Sea. The water in Saeftinghe is therefore brackish.

The mudflats (bare soil) and the salt marshes (vegetated areas) are an Eldorado for birds. Tens of thousands of birds come here to look for food, breed, rest and hibernate. Over the years, more than 200 bird species have been observed!
