The Upper Flambacher Pond, created in 1701, once served to supply water to the ore mines of the Rosenhöfer Zug district. The precious water flowed to the waterwheels there via the Upper Rosenhöfer artificial ditch.

Its main tributary is the eponymous Flambach stream, whose source is located about one kilometer northeast of the pond on the outskirts of Clausthal-Zellerfeld. However, the stream water is fed into the pond indirectly via the Schmidtsgraben, which runs west of the watercourse.

Only a small stream flows directly into the Upper Flambacher Pond on the impassable, swampy northern bank. This stream essentially represents the remaining part of the Flambach stream that is not diverted via the Schmidtsgraben.
