The Monument to the Fallen of the First World War is located in Piazza IV Novembre, in the Passetto area; in Ancona it is simply called "the Monument", par excellence. It is located at the end of Viale della Vittoria and is connected to the Passetto beach below through a wide staircase that is divided into two semicircular ramps.

It was designed in the 1920s, together with the Scalinata del Passetto, by the Ancona architect Guido Cirilli in the form of a circular temple (monoptero) characterized by an elegantly reinterpreted Doric order. The construction, with 8 fluted columns, is placed above a concentric circular staircase and is made entirely of Istrian stone. The base is decorated with helmets and swords, symbols of defense and attack respectively. In the center there is a small altar.

As a memorial to the many dead, such monuments or war memorials - such as this "Monumento ai caduti" in Ancona, built in the form of an ancient round temple - are still very important today. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said..." says the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke's Gospel, chapter 2, verse 29). The people who are remembered here, however, did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny.
Many of these monuments that one encounters on the way are a testimony - still significant and current today - to the horror of war and tyranny. They all have two essential functions, and this for each generation anew:
-1- Commemorate and remember the victims
-2- Remind us to keep the peace
