Thyborøn and the landscape of Harboøre Tange impressively tell of a dynamic landscape and man's attempt to tame it. It is an impressive example of an "engineering landscape" with dikes, groynes, harbours, defences, roads and railways.
At the end of the Viking Age the coast was about a kilometer further west than it is today and the Limford headlands were completely closed to the North Sea. Much of the traffic between North and Central Jutland took place across the headland. In the 18th and
In the 19th century there were several floods and several small communities perished.
In 1825 and again in 1862 the sea broke through the headland and the Thyborøn Canal was formed. The breakthrough also meant that the western part of the Limfjord changed from brackish to salt water and the headlands of Harboøre and Agger shifted further to the east.
In 1875 proposals were made for the establishment of a state port, and dikes and groynes were built around what was then the city. The railway to Lemvig was built in 1899 and the first port facility was built in 1915-1918. Followed the port

In 1946 the Thyborøn Act was passed, leading to the construction of a dam in 1955. They wanted to close the canal with a sluice, but nothing came of it. The preparatory work created the landscape that you can see south of Thyborøn today, with the new country road and the new railway line.

Experience the nature of Harboøre Tange and the landscape with water on both sides on foot, by bike or by train. There are marked hiking and biking trails that can be combined with the train. The cycle route between Thyborøn and Harboøre is eight kilometers long.
