Eugeen van Mieghem was an Antwerp painter, born in 1875 in the old port. His parents had a cafe and that's how he came into contact with all the people who walked around in the harbor area. He studies at the Antwerp Academy and there decides that he will become the artist of the typical harbor people: the builders, sack makers, emigrants, skippers and vagabonds. In 1902 he married a Brussels girl who also studies at the Academy, Augustine Pautre. They have one son together. Two years later she becomes seriously ill with tubercolosis and she dies in 1905. He draws her during her illness. In 1920 he married a 24-year-old nurse a second time, but divorced her again in 1925. He exhibited regularly. He dies on March 24, 1930, that date you see several times in the unveiling of the images below. An important part of his work can be found in the Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum.

The nineteenth-century artist Eugeen Van Mieghem was such a Scheldt adept. Born and raised in the beating heart of the port, he grew up on the Van Meterenkaai and on the Eilandje. There the artist became mesmerized by the hard life on the waterfront and the raw reality of dock work. Builders, sack makers, skippers, bar owners and boozers were the permanent subject of his work. Antwerp, together with the Van Mieghem Foundation, honored the bond between the painter and his home port with five life-size bronze statues on the Eilandje. Based on his work, the Dutch sculptress Carla Kamphuis-Meijer made Het Havenmeisje behind Hangar 26, Het Havenboefje on Napoleonkaai, De Landverhuizer at the intersection of Rijnkaai and Amsterdamstraat, Augustine Pautre on Entrepotkaai and Wiske on Godefriduskaai.
